Overview

Fred & Miah was a project I used as an opportunity to explore a movement I had previously studied and wanted to try my hand at using as inspiration. Through extensive use of research, inspiration, and trial and error, I designed and assembled a well-rounded line of Art Deco inspired cosmetic products.

The Ask

Fred & Miah was a brand name provided to the entirety of my packaging design class. Outside of the name, we were to curate four different package styles for three different cosmetic products of our own choice. Outside of these parameters, we were given creative freedom.

The Process

Research And Print All At Once

This process was a quick one, and I ended up using a solid percentage of the time allotted toward researching various aspects of this project. As a standard young woman, I didn’t totally mind an excuse to go look at different styles of cosmetics in the name of research. Outside of Ulta and T.J. Maxx, I spent time online researching different pattern styles, cosmetic choices, and packaging assembly for these choices. Once I landed on products to house, I moved to creating die-cuts and the print and assembly process for crit purposes.

Revisiting The Research

I have developed what I have had a particular professor refer to as “rhino skin” when it comes to my work. I take pride in removing my emotions from designs and not taking things personally. For some reason on this project critique, that rhino skin took a scratch when that professor told me my work didn’t represent what I wanted it to be. I decided to go back to the research and dig even deeper into this era. This turned into tweaking the logo and creating a new pattern to implement into both the inside and outside of each application.

Finding The Responsive Balance

Once I established the elements that would work across the board for each product, I made sure to implement them according to the size, scale, and use. I treated each application as it’s own design with brand elements to make a cohesive product line across the board. Each box featured a the pattern and inverse on the exterior sides and entire interior, and a stylized border surrounding the information on the front and backsides. The stickers saw an elimination of the pattern, and the only circular sticker was made even simpler with no use of the stylized border as it was too linear for round use.

The Result

The piece that tied this all together and helped me confidently put it to rest was photographing my packaging in its completion. This project was an instance where I really went back and forth on the “right” decision, and truly had to lean into learning more in order to put my work on the right path. Fred & Miah was curated with sophistication and glamour at the forefront with packaging to represent a time period based on these ideals.
